Welcome to part 6 of my "Sonic SatAm" review! Season 2 of "Sonic SatAm" was the point where the show actually got good because of actual CONTINUITY. Before then, it was mostly average-to-bad episodes, with an albeit good start. But yeah, one of my biggest problems with the show aside from me hating characters was the lack of continuity. Sadly, the things that should have permanent long-term consequences, don’t. For example, you'd think that Griff taking half of the Power Rock that produced the Rings for the Lake of Rings would cause long-term consequences, but it doesn't because I’d expect that to make the lake produce only half as many rings from then on.
Or how about a fake Sally infiltrator getting turned against Robotnik, shooting lasers all over his base? We never see her again, the heroes just abandon her in Robotropolis like psychopaths instead of reprogramming her to be on their side. I would’ve liked a fake Sally infiltrator better than the normal Sally! She can shoot lasers, she has infra-red vision or some kind of red eye laser like that, she can even send sticky Mega Muck quicksand from her finger. But no, she’s an idiot all episode and then forgotten.
How about the secret scrolls of magic and wonder that get forgotten after a whole episode dedicated to getting them? When Antoine was just about to be roboticized, and we even saw electricity surround him, Sonic only then stopped the roboticizer. He should’ve been made into a cool cyborg after that and been actually competent, but no, then we’d have continuity and actual consequences that last for more than one episode. That could’ve happened to Sally, too! Why did Robotnik take so long to try to roboticize her after replacing her with a fake Sally?
Sally and Antoine could’ve been awesome cyborgs, too! And there was an entire episode dedicated to destroying Robotnik’s electricity generators, but that never has lasting consequences, either. Why should I care, why should I get invested, why should I be expected to take the show seriously, when it has all these obvious dropped dangling plot threads that are ignored just an episode later? Why care about the heroes’ struggle, what are they even fighting for when they accomplish nothing? This show runs on such obvious meta logic and it takes me out of it.
It’s also lazy that while they planned to explain NICOLE’S origin, they never did. Yeah, let’s not explain the magical computer who can do anything as a lazy plot device! It's like they don't know what was really important. Sure, the show DID introduce continuity in Season 2, but by then it was too late, they had already had several plot threads that were dropped and couldn’t be resolved because it was too far ahead of when they were forgotten. And even in Season 2 where the series gets good – I especially loved seeing Ixis and the king’s Mobotropolis history which I thought were exclusive to the comic, it’s like a TV adaptation of the comic book! – even in the better part of the show, it’s still plagued by Antoine’s useless filler and he even gets a whole filler episode dedicated to torturing him, which I don’t find cathartic because the torture isn’t intentional by the characters. Plus Rotor never SAYS that he intentionally programmed the lady-bot to go stalk him to punish him.
Sonic never SAYS that he’s intentionally making him go over-the-top crazy with being a slob in his house, he even tells his friends that ANTOINE’S the slob after leaving it, not reacting properly at all to seeing Antoine go nuts because of him. And that doesn’t have consequences either, by the way. He’s fine a scene later. So him being tormented in those stories is forced the whole time rather than logical and natural, which is too distracting to be that cathartic. I'll talk more about the show in the next post; take care until then:)
