Part 2 of thoughts on Sonic writing and how it can be improved; MORE thoughts on Amy Rose; thoughts on Sally, and MUCH, MUCH MORE!!!
Welcome again to another one of my posts on Sonic writing! Now, I don't think that having Amy be a likable character again is a lost cause because while I DID hate Amy being a bossy and mean girl in "Sonic X," there WERE some things that were part of her characterization that I do LOVE and ADORE, and those were her loving swimming, cooking, shopping, and not getting wrinkles:) And I did like that she loved arts and crafts in "Sonic Boom," so all of those things that I mentioned from "Sonic X," can help make Amy be a lovable and deep character, plus if Amy's not being violently jealous or a bossy brat, I think that Amy can be a FANTASTIC character! I personally think that Amy has potential to be a great character, but Sega and/or the writers of "Sonic X," "Sonic Boom," and pretty much all of the games past "Sonic Adventure 2" had heavily squandered it>:(
In addition, can we PLEASE get rid of Amy's Piko-Piko Hammer?!? I don't hate it, but I think that Amy can use SOMETHING else like using ice magic that can swirl around her enemies OR using a crossbow like she did in "Sonic the Comic," otherwise known as Fleetway Sonic comics! I REALLY hated Sonic Boom comic #3 where Amy threw a tantrum because she didn't NEED her hammer AND I hated the "Sonic Boom" episode where she pretty much was upset about using a weapon; it's the episode where Vector appeared! Amy has used her hammer in "Sonic Adventure," "Sonic Heroes," "Sonic Battle," "Sonic Riders," and OTHER pieces of media, so I think that it's time that she did something different like using a crossbow or even use a plasma blaster! Anyway, now that THAT'S done, let's talk about Sally, shall we?
I know that A LOT of people like to treat Sally like she's an awful piece of trash in the Archie Sonic comics up to issue #230, but I don't really THINK that she deserves that kind of hate! Yes, I DID bring up that awful piece last post about how horrible Sally was to imprison Sonic in issue #40, but that doesn't really mean that I hate Sally in the Archie Sonic comics that were up to issue #230 AT ALL. I just think that how she treated Sonic in issue #40 was bad (sure, Fiona can deserve hate for slapping Tails in issue #172 and ditching the Freedom Fighters for Scourge, but can you blame her?!?). Plus I'm not fond of Sally hitting Sonic with a stick in Archie Sonic comic #7 where she dressed up as an evil sorceress, her slapping Sonic in issue #134, or her yelling at Fiona in issue #160, but other than THOSE times, I think that Sally has actually been a pretty well-written character. I think that the worst things Sally did were hitting Sonic with a stick and her yelling at Fiona were the worst things that Sally did, NOT a slap to Sonic!
I know that a LOT of people think that Sonic DID deserve the slap from Sally in issue #134, but I don't think that AT ALL. If Sonic REALLY couldn't fight AT ALL, he would have probably been SERIOUSLY been wincing in pain in issue #134, and I didn't see that AT ALL, so for Sally to think that SONIC was selfish, in my opinion, was just NOT true. I think that Sonic was being unselfish while Sally was the selfish one because Sonic was just wincing in pain in issue #133; I didn't see him saying anything like "Ow, I don't think that I can fight" or "Goodness, I think that the pain is too much for me to fight!" If Sonic didn't say ANYTHING like that, I think that Sonic would have been able to fight Eggman JUST FINE. Besides, a slap to the face isn't THAT awful, especially since Sally apologized to Sonic for that thing and her other awful behavior in issue #187, but she NEVER apologizes for hitting Sonic with a stick OR for yelling at Fiona!
In fact, I actually felt SORRY for Fiona when Sally yelled at her in issue #160! Fiona did NOTHING wrong when she lured Bean out of Freedom HQ with keys, and while Fiona didn't HAVE to get Bark to surrender, I don't think that ANY of those actions really deserved any hatred from Sally! If anything, Sally could have been GRATEFUL, but blame the writer for what he had Sally do! I don't really think that Fiona was necessarily wrong to have Scourge as a boyfriend, however, because the idea of Fiona and Scourge being a couple is intriguing:) We could have done without Fiona slapping Tails, however, because THAT wasn't needed in issue #172, and Fiona and Scourge could have become Freedom Fighters!
Anyway, back to Princess Sally Acorn. I actually think that she's a sympathetic and well-written character DESPITE the flaws that she has, like worrying about Sonic when she should know that he'll be fine and being cautious to the point of paranoia! Sure, I did list some bad things about Sally, but if I listed bad things about Sally and called HER a bad character, you might as well suggest that I put Amy on that list of characters according to THAT kind of logic! Sally was actually a nice character because she DID care for her parents, Bunnie, Sonic, and even Nicole along with other people, plus she could be a great mediator like issues 69 and 179 proved (yes, bugsy, I DID see that YouTube video where Sally was a mediator from issue #179:) )! I know that a lot of people like to consider how Sally acted from the beginning of the Archie Sonic comics to issue #230 reasons to throw Sally under the bus, but she doesn't really deserve it if you ask me!
There were times when I REALLY loved where Sally cared about Sonic like in Archie Sonic comic #53 when she said to Sonic that she didn't want to bother him with her "dumb problems!" I also liked that issue #57 had Sally say to Sonic something like this after he said that Sally was her best friend, "Right back at ya, Blue," and I loved the fact that she kissed Sonic in the forehead as well! I know that at least SOME people think Sally and Sonic make a good couple for THAT reason and more, but 1. I don't think that Sally and Sonic make a good couple AT ALL because I think that Sonic's more of an adventurer kind of guy while Sally likes ruling, and 2. I think that Sally's kiss to Sonic was more like a FRIENDSHIP kiss, not a romantic one!
I also loved how Sally was getting panicked about getting on a good date with Sonic in issue #222 because it showed that she cared about being on a good date with Sonic in that issue with her being given a second chance, her wanting to look good, and so on:) I think that Sally, before the reboot, was the only one of the Freedom Fighters who has actual depth to her character and makes her feel real and relatable! Anyway, I've got some to stuff to talk about with Sonic and other things, and until then, toodles:)
